This past Saturday a few of us ran the 5 Peaks Nakiska trail race, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. The temperature was perfect, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, only a few people saw a bear, and there were some seriously amazing volunteers out there (thanks Adrian).
My friends and I signed up for the 5 Peaks trail running series (Central Alberta). 5 Peaks is 5 races – 1 per month May-Sept. This race series is a great way to discover new trails, and is a really welcoming race environment for those new to trail running. Every race is held at a different place (or at least a vastly different route). This year, the May race was held at Canada Olympic Park, June was in Canmore (at the Nordic Center), July was in Sundre, August was at Nakiska and in September, we’re back to the Canmore Nordic Center (but a different route). If you are interested in running a 5 Peaks race…sign up early, because lots of them sell out!
Some of us opted to do the Enduro this year (usually around 12-14k per race), while others opted for the shorter distance (Sport course – usually around 5-7k). Either way, at every 5 Peaks event, you’re bound to do lots of climbing, meet lots of happy runners, and eat lots of yummy post race snacks…mmm Nutella.
