Carolyn and I headed down to Fernie this weekend for the 2nd annual Tears and Gears 10k trail run and 13k mountain bike race.
It was a fantastic race. It still has a small town authentic feel, and it’s really well organized.
The race starts at the aquatic center with the run. I was worried about not having fresh legs for the bike…and I can understand now why they call it “Tears and Gears” :). The trails were absolutely amazing and on a cool morning, it was perfect conditions for trail running. The 10k run was challenging, but an absolute blast…windy, hilly and single track…what more can a gal ask for?
The race can be done as a team of two or solo. Carolyn and I both opted to go the coo-coo route (solo).
Once you finish the run, you loop back to the Aquatic center where the teams pass off and the soloists grab their bikes. Now, how would I describe the bike course…hmmm…one word: challenging :). Being that this was my very first mountain bike race, it was tough. It was dusty and there were lots of roots and boardwalks. It was technical for me, and I was definitely out of my element. Fortunately, there were tons of helpful local racers and volunteers who made it an absolutely fantastic experience…well besides the whole course kicking my butt thing :).
Congrats to Carolyn on her first multi sport event!!!
