I can’t think of a better way to kick off the loppet season than at a race at one of my favourite places ever…Nipika Mountain Resort. I just adore the team out at Nipika and am always excited for a chance to tear up their amazing trails ;).
Nipika (along with Toby Creek Nordic) hosted a weekend of loppet fun! Saturday was the 30km (as well as some shorter distances) classic race and Sunday the skate ski race.
I headed out there with some of my favourite fellow FNSCers for the classic race on Saturday. The conditions were fantastic. Nipika got puked on during the week, so there was a lot of fresh snow for us to play in! The 30km race was a new route from the last time I raced the course…and it was great! With lots of climbing and some good opportunities for double poling, I was feeling pretty lethargic during the first 15km loop. I was glad to refuel before the second lap. I was also fortunate to have some great company on the first lap (thanks Mark!) who kept me moving.
I think the toughest part of the loppet was actually looping down around the barn at the half way point, and smelling the burgers on the bbq…it was pretty tempting to call it a day knowing there was a veggie burger waiting with my name on it (thanks Steve!).
At any rate, I convinced myself that I could wait for the burger and the second lap felt quite a bit quicker with all the fresh snow cleared off of the tracks, Mark breathing down my neck ;), and the fact that I was just so tickled to be out enjoying their amazing trails.
Congrats to all the skiers who participated (check out the results here), and huge thank you to Lyle, Steve, Lainey, Dianne and all their fantastic volunteers for another well organized, brilliantly fun event!
Once the ski season is over, I guess I’ll have to get training for the Crazy Soles Nipika trail run for another excuse to head back to Nipika.
