Drayton Valley First Annual Triathlon/Duathlon

This weekend marked the first annual Drayton Valley Triathlon/Duathlon. With my parents living in Drayton Valley (and the fact that it was Mother’s Day weekend – Happy Mother’s Day Mom!!!), it was a great excuse to enter the sprint triathlon as a team (with my Dad). My friend Jenny decided it sounded equally as fun, and opted to make the trek up to Drayton Valley with me to compete in the duathlon.

Jenny, Dad and I...just after body marking

After volunteering for the Kids of Steel race on Saturday (what a hoot), we were eager for the race come Sunday morning. The weather was perfect…blue skies and just a light breeze.

With about 125 racers, it was a great turn out for the inaugural race.

The triathlon started with a 750m swim in the Drayton Valley pool. Dad and I decided that I would do the swim/bike, and he would bring us in for a strong finish on the run. The swim was fast and fun. It was challenging swimming in a lane with 3 other racers, and I couldn’t help but push a bit out of my comfort zone right off the bat. It paid off…I was super happy with my faster than anticipated swim time.

Next it was off to the 20km bike portion. It was a beautiful out and back to the next community (Rocky Rapids). It was a fast ride out (with the wind at our backs and down hill), but it equated to a bit of a push on the return (uphill) to town. I was sure happy to pass off the timing chip to Dad for him to take over on the run. Dad zipped through the 5km course at a wicked fast pace and finished in no time. In hindsight, it’s a bit comical…Dad didn’t hand his chip in right away at the finish line, and it didn’t deactivate…so it continued capturing our time for about 10 mins until we realized Dad had the chip on :). Would have been great to have the podium finish…but I felt just as fortunate to be able to spend the day racing with my dad.

Now on to Miss Jenny’s race…she killed it! She had a super fast bike and zipped around town on the run at a fast clip. She ended up finishing 2nd overall female in the duathlon…hopefully she enjoyed it enough to come back next year to challenge for the first place spot. Awesome work Jenny!

Winning teams and individual racers

All in all, another great weekend with friends and family. Thanks for volunteering on Mother’s Day of all days Mom :).

Looking forward to a summer of adventures…
