Following our mountain biking in the Asheville, North Carolina region, we headed south for a weekend of pampering and road riding at George Hincapie’s Hotel Domestique. As a recommendation from Chris’ colleague, we weren’t sure exactly what to expect. We were not disappointed. The place is amazing. We awoke each morning with our bikes set out, tires pumped, water bottles filled and Garmin’s with our route already selected.
The riding in the area is nothing short of spectacular and the folks at the Hotel are incredibly personable and knowledgeable. We loved the cozy atmosphere (13 rooms total, French villa inspired, salt water pool) and not to mention the fantastic food.
The first day, we ventured out around the Green Cove watershed area and were in awe of the lush surroundings, beautiful views, stunningly quiet roads and pain inducing switchbacks ;). We rode about 50 miles and were grateful we had stopped for lunch in the cute Wild Flower Bakery in Saluda (note if you ask nicely, they take requests for the next day’s scone flavour!).
The second day, we rode up and over Ceasars Head State Park. Again, the roads were spectacular and we covered a lot of elevation. Unfortunately, about 50 miles in, my chain broke and Chris had to finish the ride without me drafting off him :). The staff at Hotel Domestique came and gathered me so I could be back in time for my afternoon massage. We were spoiled! Life is good.
We wish we had more time to explore the roads in this area, the cute town of Greenville…and more time to spend at Hotel Domestique. Highly recommend this hotel to any avid cyclists. You will not be disappointed. We cannot wait to return!
