Based on a fantastic recommendation from my dear friend Adrian – Mom, Dad and I chose to spend a week of their UK visit on the Isle of Wight. We stayed in the town of Ventnor and enjoyed every moment of our ocean views and amazing scenery. Our main reason for choosing the Isle of Wight was for the cycling and rambling. We lucked out finding the perfect accommodations right on the coast but it did make for some tricky cycling to get out of Ventnor (about a 25% grade to get up to the main roads. We rented hard tail mountain bikes with slicks and originally had planned to do some off road riding but we soon learned that the “downs” are quite difficult to navigate and not that well maintained – the real finds are the quite side roads that road bikes would definitely be suitable for. The week we were there ended up being a cycling festival as well so it was really nice to see so many people out enjoying the roads and trails!

Last week was the first chance I had to visit Chris in Boston since my move to London which gave him plenty of time to scope out the best restaurants, trails, swimming holes and cycling routes for us to explore…and boy did he find some goodies.

This past weekend I headed out to Southern England to The New Forest. The New Forest is an area covers 566 square kms. It includes a number of villages and hamlets all surrounded by gates so that the ponies, deer, cattle, sheep and donkeys aren’t able to escape.  With amazing amounts of unenclosed pasture land, the animals here have the right of way.

For my second weekend in London, I was thrilled to join my friend Brian in a ride to (and around) Richmond Park. Richmond Park is the largest of the eight Royal Parks and the biggest enclosed space in London.

With a few months in London ahead of me, I thought it might be fun to post London highlights along the way…so here we go!

I was very fortunate that before I had time even think about being homesick, my friend Jenny came to visit during my first weekend in London. Jenny had a few recommendations from friends to hike (or ramble as they call it in England) the Seven Sisters route from Eastbourne out to Seaford. We lucked out with great weather and the views were absolutely beautiful.

Following our mountain biking in the Asheville, North Carolina region, we headed south for a weekend of pampering and road riding at George Hincapie’s Hotel Domestique.  As a recommendation from Chris’ colleague, we weren’t sure exactly what to expect. We were not disappointed. The place is amazing. We awoke each morning with our bikes set out, tires pumped, water bottles filled and Garmin’s with our route already selected.

Before getting Chris settled in Boston for the year, we took a little road trip to North Carolina to check out the mountain biking around Asheville. From there, we headed to George Hincapie’s Hotel Domestique in South Carolina for some unbelievable road riding.  For our mountain bike excursion, Chris found us a sweet little cabin outside Asheville, which was the perfect place for our daily explorations to begin.

This past weekend marked the third annual Drayton Valley Triathlon. Unfortunately it was delayed this year due to a boil water advisory. This may have accounted for less participants than the previous two years.  We did luck out though as the delay allowed us to scout out and secure our ringer cyclist Chris :).

This year, I was invited to join my dear friend Adrian (and some of his ski folks) to track our kms skied – each setting a target for the season. Dad joined in and set a target of 1,000 kms (completed this weekend – congrats Dad!!!). I started with a goal of 500 kms which I passed in January and reset to 750 kms. With work travel coming up, I knew this past weekend would be my last chance to complete my remaining 20 kms.

My friends Sean and Henry gathered a crew for the Foothills Nordic Masters Invitational Biathlon Race this past weekend. I highly recommend attending this next year if you’re looking to try out biathlon. It’s very well organized, fun prizes and they provide the guns/pellets, as well as over an hour of instruction for those who haven’t shot a gun before (like moi).     » Continue Reading
